Check whether a browser can open your webcam and microphone at the same time, select the intended inputs, preview live video, inspect negotiated track settings and confirm relative microphone activity. This combined test separates permission and device-selection failures from browser-visible capture behavior without claiming laboratory-grade image or sound quality.
How to run a complete camera and microphone check
- Close video-call, streaming and recording apps that may already be using either device.
- Connect the webcam, headset or USB microphone directly where practical, then press Start Camera & Microphone.
- Allow both permissions. A combined PASS requires one live video track and one live audio track; permission for only one device is not enough.
- After permission, select the exact browser-visible camera and microphone you intend to use.
- Move in front of the camera and confirm the preview changes rather than showing a frozen frame.
- Speak at a normal distance and check that the relative microphone meter responds without treating its percentage as calibrated loudness.
- Review negotiated resolution, frame rate, sample rate, channel count and reported echo-cancellation, noise-suppression and auto-gain settings.
- Stop the test to release both tracks, then repeat once if a result is unexpected.
How to interpret the combined result
Combined camera and microphone result guide| Result | What the page observed | What to do next |
|---|
| PASS — streams active | The browser supplied both a video track and an audio track; the preview is live and the input meter can respond. | Check the focused webcam, microphone playback or spectrum tools if quality—not basic access—is the concern. A pass is not a lifetime hardware guarantee. |
| WARNING — partial or unclear behavior | One path appears usable while the other is silent, frozen, wrong, muted or selected unexpectedly. | Verify the two selectors and isolate each device with the focused tests before changing hardware. |
| FAIL — access did not start | Permission was denied, a device was missing or busy, the chosen input disappeared, startup was interrupted, or a live track ended. | Follow the exact error guidance, close competing apps, reconnect the device, reload after permission changes and retry. |
Troubleshoot permission and startup failures
- Permission denied: allow both camera and microphone in browser site settings and operating-system privacy controls.
- No device found: connect and enable both inputs, then reload so the browser can enumerate them again.
- Device busy: close meeting, streaming, virtual-camera and recording software that may hold either device.
- Selected device unavailable: reconnect it or choose another browser-visible input.
- Startup interrupted or disconnected: stop, reconnect the hardware and begin a fresh session.
Separate access from quality
This page answers whether both capture paths can work together and what settings the browser negotiated. It does not grade sharpness, autofocus, exposure, microphone clarity, room echo, noise floor or frequency response.
Use the focused Webcam Test for observed frame callbacks and video settings, the Microphone Playback Test to hear a short local capture, and the Microphone Spectrum Test for relative noise and frequency inspection.
Browser-visible settings and limits
Resolution, frame rate, sample rate, channel count and microphone-processing flags describe the active browser tracks. They do not certify sensor maxima, lens quality, acoustic sensitivity, driver behavior in another app or performance on a video-call service with its own compression.
The microphone meter is relative waveform energy, not calibrated dB or sound-pressure level. A moving meter proves browser-visible signal activity, not clean or correctly routed sound.
Privacy and safe use
The live preview is attached to the local page and the microphone meter is calculated from the active browser stream. The diagnostic does not record, save or upload your video or audio. Stop releases the tracks; browser and operating-system permission controls remain authoritative.

Camera and microphone test FAQ
Why are camera and microphone labels hidden?
Browsers may hide non-default device names until permission is granted. Start the test first; GearCheck Lab then refreshes the camera and microphone list exposed by the browser.
Why did the browser open a different camera or microphone?
The first request may use browser defaults. After permission, choose the intended camera and microphone. The test requests the selected device IDs and reports a failure if that exact input can no longer be opened.
Why does the webcam look less smooth in low light?
Many webcams lengthen exposure in low light, which can reduce effective motion smoothness. Add steady light and compare again before treating a lower negotiated frame rate as a device fault.
Is the microphone percentage calibrated?
No. It is a relative browser-stream waveform level for confirming input activity. It is not acoustic decibels, sound-pressure level, sensitivity, frequency response or a quality score.
What if the camera works but the microphone does not?
Treat that as a partial failure, not a combined pass. Check the selected microphone, mute controls, browser and operating-system permissions, and other apps using the device, then use the focused Microphone Test.
Does this test record or upload my camera and microphone?
The live preview and microphone meter are designed to run locally in the page. The diagnostic does not record, save or upload the media stream. Standard hosting infrastructure still processes normal web requests, as explained in the privacy policy.
